My son said a while ago that there were thoughts a person could not have if he only spoke one language. I said I had trouble believing there were thoughts I could not think. Robert Pirsig, in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, has some Koreans tell him that thinking in a language with only 26 letters was limiting. So it appears that my son may be correct. Something about the ideagrams in Korean. But Korean has an alphabet. Japanese has three alphabets and it is unclear to me how many characters are in them. The first two seem to be pretty small in number, with the third having thousands of characters. Chinese has thousands as well. I thought that if I were to choose to study one of the Asian languages I think I would choose Japanese. More structured than Chinese and I have had exposure to it a little in martial arts. So I tried both Chinese and Japanese, as well as Italian and Spanish, without much success. Triaged all of the languages except French. Maybe as I get better at French currently unavailable thoughts might emerge, though maybe not as exotic as Chinese or Japanese.
