Building a Unique Dining Table with Wood and Metal

I have been working on a dining room table designed by my wife. The top is cherry, milled from my friend’s property, with a strip of purpleheart, purchased at The Tree House in Burlington VT. The sides are live-edge. I am making the top, including the skirt and supports. My friend is making the base, which will be metal. My metalworking skills are not up to the task. My friend Derek has a YouTube channel with some of his metalworking on display. https://www.youtube.com/@dereksstuff8395.

The table top is finished through the first sanding, using the belt sander with an 80 grit belt. I have some small seams to fill, then finish the sanding of the top and a couple of coats of poly. Then flip it over, add the skirt, sand and poly, and the table will be ready for Derek’s base.

The table top is sitting on an outfeed table I made from an Ikea desktop. The desktop was left over from when I retired and closed my office. This desk had no hardware, so repurposing made sense. The top had a coating on top that makes removing dried glue very easy.
