Distractions

2/2/2022:
Yesterday driving between the Champlain Islands and the Adirondacks I listened to a Hidden Brian podcast, You 2.0: Deep Work. Shanar Vedantam (Host) was interviewing Cal Newport, author of Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World. Much of the focus was on the benefits of concentrating for extended periods without distractions. Makes sense. During my career I was mainly what Cal describes as a decision machine. I was there to lead and answer questions from my staff. Often my days, 10 to 12 hours, consisted of five to ten minute interactions with staff and investors and clients. Deep work was nearly impossible. Now that I am for the most part retired, I am interested in advancing my interests. Years ago I read a Wall Street article titled “Multi-Tasking makes you Stupid”. Attention spans shrink. Deep Work on my own projects is attractive. I bought the book and started reading. The beginning of the book talks about the benefits of Deep Work, but after the podcast I am convinced. I am looking forward to the strategies sections.
